Sketch Comedy to Film is a practical, hands-on course designed to guide students through the full creative journey of making a comedy sketch β€” from the first idea all the way to a finished filmed piece. Students learn how sketch comedy works, then how to translate that idea to screen before actually filming and editing that idea. So by the end of the course, students don’t just understand comedy & filmmaking β€” they’ve practiced it.

How the Course Works

1. Online Course (5 weeks)

A small group of up to 10 students come together to take part in a guided online programme covering:

  • How sketch comedy works (structure, escalation, payoff)

  • Turning ideas into clear outlines and scripts

  • Translating comedy from page to screen

  • Filmmaking concepts

Throughout the course, students write and submit sketches

2. Filming Day (Week 6)

At the end of the online course comes a hands-on filming day.

As a group, students:

  • collaboratively select a small number of sketches

  • rehearse, film, and edit them together

  • experience what a real sketch filming day looks like

3. Editing - (Week 7)

After filming, students take part in a guided editing phase.

  • learn the fundamentals of editing

  • see how performances and jokes change in the edit

  • collaboratively shape the final versions of the filmed sketches

Students finish the course with completed sketches and a practical understanding of how to brainstorm, writer, shoot and edit sketches.

    The filming process requires sustained focus, responsibility, and collaboration.

    Students should expect to be involved throughout β€” contributing ideas, being quiet and focused during takes, knowing their role, and working together to solve problems as they arise. Filmmaking is collaborative by nature: when everyone gives the sketch their full attention, the final work is stronger.

    πŸ‘‰ You need to be open to the full process.
    Students should be interested in making sketches β€” not just performing in them. That said, if a student is primarily interested in acting, we will accommodate this as much as possible while still keeping the day collaborative and fair to the group.

    To take part in the filming day, students are expected to engage with the online course and submit work during the programme.

    πŸ‘‰ Professional behaviour is expected.
    Filming requires listening, patience, and respect for others’ roles so the group can work effectively together.

    If a sketch is selected to be filmed, the student who wrote it becomes the creative lead on that piece, as much as they are comfortable doing so.

    Students make creative choices together with clear guidance throughout. The facilitator oversees the filming process, ensuring the sketch is captured properly for editing and that the shoot runs smoothly. Students learn how decisions are made β€” not just what decisions to make.

    πŸ‘‰ Ideas are explored, not judged.
    Sketches are selected based on practicality, time, and what best serves the group on the day β€” not on whose idea is β€œbetter.” Not having a sketch filmed does not reflect ability or effort, and is a normal part of creative production.

    πŸ‘‰ Sharing finished work
    The final filmed sketches created during the course may be shared on our website and public platforms (including YouTube), as part of showcasing the work produced through the programme. Students will always be credited for their involvement, unless they prefer not to be.

  • πŸ‘‰ Students become the crew.
    There is no external film crew. Students take part across acting, sound, lighting, assisting, and problem-solving on set. Everyone is actively involved in making the sketch work.

    πŸ‘‰ You don’t need technical knowledge in advance.
    Part of the learning is understanding how filming actually works β€” including why scenes are shot in full, how coverage works, and where creative decisions really happen (often in the edit).

    πŸ‘‰ No previous experience is required.
    Curiosity, collaboration, and willingness to take part matter far more than technical skill.

  • πŸ‘‰ Not every sketch will be filmed.
    Depending on time and complexity, we may film only one or two sketches on the day. This is intentional β€” the focus is on quality, learning, and real experience, not rushing to shoot everything. We would rather make one strong sketch than two rushed ones.

    πŸ‘‰ This course is best suited to students who are curious, collaborative, and interested in how comedy and filmmaking are actually made β€” not just the final performance.

Practical Details

Online Sessions
The online portion of the course takes place remotely. Students take part from home and meet online once per week. Each online session will run for approximately 2.5 hours, with some sessions running slightly longer / shorter, depending.

In-Person Filming Day
Filming is done using professional camera and sound equipment, with the facilitator operating and guiding the technical setup. The filming day takes place in person, with all students attending the same location. The filming location will be a central, accessible venue based on the cohort’s region and will be confirmed in advance.

Casting & Performing
Casting is collaborative and handled within the group. Students may perform in sketches, take on crew roles, or do a combination of both. The focus is on making the sketches work as a group, rather than formal auditions or fixed roles.

Location & Timing
The in-person filming day will run for approximately 6 hours. Students should plan to be present for the full day and bring a lunch.

Safeguarding
The facilitator is Garda Vetted.

Cost + Dates
Cost is €399 but I’m running the first cohort at €249 to keep numbers small and make sure every student gets strong feedback and support. Available dates are shown on the booking page. Places are limited to 10 students.

Wk 1 – How Sketch Works + Generating Ideas

Primary focus: Understanding the form

  • What a sketch is (and isn’t)

  • Comic engines, escalation, payoff

  • Watching & breaking down example sketches together

  • Group idea generation

Outcome by end of week: Everyone understands what they’re aiming for and has multiple rough ideas.

Wk 2 – Ideas to Clear Outlines (+ Early Writing)

Primary focus: Turning instinct into structure

  • Pitching ideas (continues every week)

  • How to spot a workable idea

  • Turning ideas into clear outlines

  • Beginning to write with the camera in mind

Outcome: Each student has one strong outline (or is close).

Wk 3 – Writing for Screen

Primary focus: Making sketches playable

  • Writing lean, filmable scripts

  • Dialogue vs. Action

  • Fixing pacing, clarity, endings

  • Beginning to write with the camera in mind

Outcome: Full draft scripts that can be realistically be filmed

Wk 4 – From Page to Screen

Primary focus: What a focused set looks like

  • Blocking, movement, performance, crew roles

  • What directing actually means

  • How to shoot for the edit and why so

  • Filming location?

Outcome: Students stop thinking like writers only and start thinking like filmmakers.

Wk 5 – Pre-Production & Selection

Primary focus: Getting ready to shoot

  • Read and select final sketch

  • Assign cast & crew

  • Set location

  • Production day walk through

  • Set expectations

Outcome: Everyone knows their job

Wk 6 – In Person Filming Day

Primary focus: Hands on experience

  • Rehearse scenes

  • Film

  • Staying focused under shoot conditions

  • Solve problems together

  • Experience the pace and pressure of a real shoot

Outcome: Payoff week, everything we’ve been working towards

Wk 7 – Edit

Primary focus: Where past decisions come together

  • organise, set up, sync and prep footage captured

  • show how editing software works

  • choice of where to cut affects the project

  • see how comedy changes in the edit

Outcome: Students understand how choices made weeks ago affects edit today.
